Metallwaren Galvanik roughly translates as Metalwork Electroplating. Weimar is a city in the former East Germany. Metallwaren Galvanik Weimar, known as MGW, or GHK, was formed in 1953 and during the 1950s issued train sets which were approximately S scale in size, but designed to run on standard 0 gauge track. The 0-4-0 steam loco was followed by a 2-4-0 and a streamlined 'Borsig' loco manufactured using Bakelite. 8 wheeled coaches were introduced including double deck (Doppelstock) coaches. Circa 1960 the trains were reissued as S gauge which was straightforward as the models were undersized for 0 gauge. During the 1980s, a series of clockwork Tram sets, Trambino, was produced, both with plastic track and without, as floor toys. The trams were issued in various colours including yellow, green, blue, purple and red, with cartoon window outlines of people and animals.
The company was nationalised in 1959, becoming VEB (K) Metallspielwaren Weimar. VEB (K) refers to a state owned factory, and Metallspielwaren translates as Metal Toys. MGW became part of Kombinats Speilwaren Sonneberg in 1980, becoming independent again in 1990 as Grip Metallspielwaren GmbH, and ceased trading in 1999.
