Mercury was formed by Attilio Clemente and Antonio Cravero in 1932 as die casters for the Italian automobile industry, their first toy being a gun in 1939 followed by die cast vehicles after WWII although it was not until 1962 that Mercury introduced the constant 1/43 scale for which it is remembered. Mercury manufactured their MicroMercury range of 1/80 models from 1949 followed by the Speedy series 1/66 models to compete with Matchbox and Hot Wheels. The Mercury range included cars, racing cars, trucks, scooters, military, construction and agricultural vehicles, ships and aeroplanes. Mercury ceased trading in 1978.
